CAIRO: A shoe was hurled at former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as he was about to begin addressing a gathering in Lahore on Sunday, local reports have said.
As soon as Sharif reached the podium to deliver a speech at a ceremony he was attending at Jamia Naeemia, a man hurled a shoe and hit him between his neck and shoulder, according to The Express Tribune.
Though visibly shaken, Sharif was unhurt and carried on with his speech, although only to thank the organizers.
The attacker reportedly chanted religious slogans after attacking the leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).
He was indentfied as Talha Munawwar, a former student of the Islamic university in Lahore, and was detained and handed over to police, the Geo News reported.
He was also taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment due to the injuries sustained after he was beaten up by the security personnel at the venue.
The motive of the attacker was reportedly to mark his dissent against the ruling PML-N government.
The incident comes the same day that another man lobbed a shoe at interior minister Ahsan Iqbal while he was addressing a workers’ convention in Narowal and a day after ink was thrown on Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif in Sialkot.
Anger among some people over the government’s performance has began to show as general elections approach and Pakistani politicians return to their constituencies to muster support.
